Custom Number Format Command

Question:    How do I format cells to show dates as the day of the week?

Answer:        By using the Custom number format command

Why:           To display dates as the day of the week. (The text function can also be used to show dates as the day of the week)

 Applies To: Excel 2003, 2007, and 2010

  1. To show the day of the week for the dates in column E

2.         Select the data range E2:E19

3.            Right click on the selected area

4.            Select Format Cells

5.            Select /Enter as below

The result will be displayed as per the following screen shot

  • This “trick” didn’t work for my MicroSoft Office Professional 2010 version.  There is no option for the “dddd” under the number/custom tab :(

      Jean, below are instructions on how to change dates to days using MS Office 2010 Professional. We hope your problem will be solved, let us know if you require further assistance in these regards.
      - Select any date format under the number/custom tab
      - In the type text box: Replace the contents of the text box with dddd
      - Press enter or click OK

  • When I download a report from another software programt to Excel, it has the debits in one column and the credits in another column but doesn’t show them as a negative amount. How do you convert all values in the same column to show the negative symbol or brackets? Better yet how do I move them to the other column but showing them as a negative amount?Â

      Pattie, to convert a range of numbers to negative values follow the steps given below. Your feedback will be greatly appreciated.
      - In a blank cell, enter in the value -1
      - Select the cell with the value -1
      - Select Copy
      - Select the desired range with negative values
      - Right click on the selected range
      - Select Paste Special
      - Under the operation group, select Multiply
      - Select OK
      - Your values are now converted to negative values
